The Link between Climate Change and Florida Aquatic Ecosystems
Ecosystem Service Payments for Florida's Water
Over the past 50 years, humans have created impacts on aquatic ecosystems that range from shallow to deep. Humans have also transformed the Florida landscape. Cities and towns are built near water. Farms, mines, and other land uses are created near water. Florida is a leading state in the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Mosquito control practices have dramatically reduced the presence of certain aquatic insects. Development of new water resources has also increased and damaged existing aquatic ecosystems. All of these human actions have contributed to the degradation of water resources.
As a result, Florida faces many problems. Increasing pollution from runoff and other contaminants has made water bodies less desirable for recreational activities. Erosion has caused land degradation and loss of wetlands. Continued development and the use of water resources has led to changing water tables, species extinctions, and lowered water quality. The Public Works Department of Florida has been working for over a decade to reduce the impacts of human activities on Florida's water resources and to protect Florida's aquatic ecosystems.
Aquatic ecosystems are the environments that support native plants and animals. We, as humans, depend upon these animals and plants for food and other products. The effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems are not as well understood as land ecosystems. We have been clearing forests for generations to create farm and ranch land. Removing vegetation and trees has altered the landscape and the quality of water in streams, lakes, and wetlands. Other human activities such as urbanization, the introduction of exotic plants and animals, or water pollution can have a negative impact on aquatic resources. These activities may cause the degradation of the flow of water and decrease the species diversity in the ecosystems. Some researchers believe that the current trend of aquatic resources degradation is now occurring at a much higher rate than in the past. 827ec27edc
