Uttara Kanda, considered being a later addition to the epic, chronicles the last years of Rama and his brothers, and Sita. Rama and Sita spend some years peacefully ruling Ayodhya, but despite successfully completing the Agni pariksha, rumors persist regarding Sita's faithfulness to Rama during her captivity. Rama yields to the rumors, banishing a pregnant Sita to the hermitage in the woods. There, the sage Valmiki offers her shelter, and she gives birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusha. Valmiki teaches Lava and Kusha the verses of the Ramayana and they perform the epic for Rama. Upon hearing the verses concerning Sitas' exile, Rama is deeply grieved and Valmiki calls Sita before Rama. But Sitas' mother, Earth, opens and swallows Sita. After learning that Lava and Kusha are his children, Ramas' incarnation ends and he is summoned back to the realm of the gods.
