Chambers met Vincente Minnelli during the filming of Camelot. She sent him several of her movies. Realizing how destructive her father was, he offered to take care of her. Chambers portrayed a young girl who has to leave a New York orphanage and is taken in by a reluctant teenage couple. The latter part of the movie starred 15-year-old Kim Basinger. Chambers, who considered herself a serious actress, was paid $350,000 for the film, which grossed over a million at the box office. The film won the 1974 Golden Globe for New Star of the Year (Actress) to Chambers, the first of three Golden Globes (one shared with her costar) for her fifth nomination.
