The company is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange, under the symbol PLDT; the stock launched its IPO in 1994.[6] Through a series of takeover transactions, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company was spun off into a separate company, while the existing PLDT shares were converted to a capital stock issue.[4][7] Its main competitors are Globe Telecom and Smart Communications. The company acquired its main Internet business, Phatico, Inc. and Cloud 9 Networks, Inc. in August 2010. PLDT was renamed as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) Internet Access Service, Inc. or dIASe after the spinoff of the division in 2012.[8] It acquired Aboitiz Land Corporation (VALCO) and most of PLDT's local telecommunications assets in November 2013. In August 2017, PLDT Spin Company acquired the local network of Australia's largest telecom company Telstra, which will be the largest "3G++" mobile network of the Philippines and the only one that can easily access the 4G LTE technology.[9]

Its principal activity is the sales of telecommunications services, telecom-related products and services, broadband services, online content, internet access, digital technologies, internet of things, and mobile devices. It is also a data center operator in the Philippines, and provides data center services via its subsidiaries PLDT Convergence, a data center service provider; PLDT Communications, a broadband, fixed line and mobile service provider; and PLDT Idea, a content and services provider.[10]

PLDT net income was recorded as ₱51.35 billion in 2009, ₱48.80 billion in 2010, ₱56.28 billion in 2011, ₱52.79 billion in 2012 and ₱51.85 billion in 2013, before adjusting for foreign exchange gains or losses, as well as certain amortization and impairment charges.
