Cracking a DES key is an expensive process in terms of both time and hardware. There are 256 possible key values, so 256 trials are required. The cracker makes a series of trials, and if a trial produces a result that is not what the original plaintext should have been, the cracker realizes that it has made a mistake. The cracker must repeat the trial, but starting from a position known to be wrong and thus this step must be repeated 256 times each time.
