The presentation is pretty solid, with plausible on-screen controls and menus, a decent soundtrack and a welcome load of not-so-typical locales to explore, the game's biggest problem is that it is rather bland and usually relies heavily on repetition to make it feel good. Environment design is somewhat static, character designs are a step up from generic, and the backgrounds is sometimes very repetitive. As for other issues -- such as the occasional lack of on-screen prompts for actions -- they are somewhat par for the course and often take place early in the game and don't get addressed until the second half of the game.
The end game is the best part of the game, as you get to play as three new characters. They're all fairly interesting and quite fun to play and the end game is a nice way to end the game. The last boss battle is another highlight of the game, with a nice variety of tricks pulled off for skillful players to exploit.
The presentation is something of a mixed bag, on one hand, some dialogues are rendered in motion, but on the other, the game is yanked at regular intervals to mute duplicate dialogues over the radio (a reason to mute?), and other parts of the game seem to be set with a P.O.V. camera that lingers a little too long and thankfully zooms back out before the player can begin to go off script.
This genre is at its best when it combines some sort of action game with platform or RPG elements, but Urban Reign does neither. What it does have is a lot of well-designed and varied environments. Levels are full-on open-world environments, with a variety of things to interact with and find hidden in them. Enemy AI is a lot of fun when it's competent, but otherwise feels like its level of competence is out of reach. d2c66b5586
